Research Activity by Dr. Gabor Somlyai

During my study at the University, I worked for the Biological Research Center at Szeged, Hungary. Working on my masters degree I used liposomes to transform mammalian cell lines with the thymidine kinase gene. Later I took part in the cloning work of the promoter region of ribosomal RNA.

In the Plant Protection Institute, we carried out extensive studies to determine the number and the function of genes playing a role in plant-microbe interaction. Several thousand mutants were isolated and tested. We isolated the genes involved in pathogenesis.

At the Georg-August University in Gottingen, my aim was to isolate mutants that failed to produce extracellular polysaccharides (alginate, levan) in order to investigate their role in the pathogenesis.

The laboratory at the University of Columbia, Missouri was concerned with the genetic analysis of syringotoxin (ST) production. I mapped the genes involved in ST synthesis on a 35,000 base pair long DNA fragment.

At the Hungarian National Institute of Oncology, I investigated the mechanism involved in necrosis of tumorous cells caused by the tumor necrosis factor .

For over a year, I worked for the D for H Foundation which supported a new cancer research program based on my hypothesis.

HYD Ltd. for Research and Development was established at the end of 1992, to develop a new type of medication for curing cancer and it possesses all the rights connected with my invention.
